How Long Does It Take to
Learn Hindi?
The FSI estimates 1,100 hours to professional proficiency — but that's classroom hours. Here's what the timeline actually looks like for self-study learners using streaming immersion.
What the FSI Data Actually Means
The Foreign Service Institute classifies Hindi as a Category III language — harder than European languages but easier than Mandarin, Arabic, or Japanese. Their 1,100-hour estimate is based on full-time classroom instruction (6–8 hours per day) with professional teachers and structured curricula.
For self-study learners doing 1–2 hours per day, the realistic timeline to conversational fluency (B1–B2) is 2–3 years. However, immersion through Hindi streaming content — Bollywood films, Netflix originals, YouTube channels — can significantly compress this timeline by providing thousands of hours of authentic input.
The Devanagari script is your first priority. Unlike Chinese characters, Devanagari is a phonetic alphabet — once you learn the ~50 characters and their combinations, you can read any Hindi text. Most learners achieve functional reading ability in 4–6 weeks. Skipping the script and relying on romanisation (transliteration) significantly slows long-term progress.
