Question 1

Is italki or Preply better for language learning?

Accepted Answer

italki is better for most independent language learners because of its lower prices (community tutors from around $4–5 per lesson), wider language selection (150+ vs 50+), and flexible pay-per-lesson model. Preply is better if you want a structured curriculum, business language training, or a more polished platform experience. For casual learners on a budget, italki wins clearly on value.

Question 2

Why is italki cheaper than Preply?

Accepted Answer

italki has two tutor tiers: community tutors (non-certified native speakers, from around $4–5 per lesson) and professional teachers (certified, from $15/hr). Preply only lists professional tutors who go through a vetting process, which raises the floor price. If you want affordable conversation practice with a native speaker, italki's community tutors are unmatched on price.

Question 3

Does Preply have better tutors than italki?

Accepted Answer

Preply tutors go through a more rigorous vetting process, which means the average quality floor is higher. However, italki's professional teacher tier is also high quality. The difference is that italki also offers community tutors who may not have formal teaching qualifications but are excellent for casual conversation practice. For structured lessons, both platforms are comparable in quality.

Question 4

Can I get a free trial on italki or Preply?

Accepted Answer

Both platforms offer discounted first lessons rather than completely free trials. italki offers a discounted introductory lesson with new tutors. Preply offers 50% off your first lesson with any tutor. Neither offers fully free lessons, but both let you try a tutor at reduced cost before committing.

Question 5

Which is better for learning rare languages — italki or Preply?

Accepted Answer

italki is significantly better for rare languages. italki supports 150+ languages including many that Preply doesn't cover (Swahili, Tagalog, Welsh, Catalan, etc.). Preply focuses on the most popular 50+ languages. If you're learning a less common language, italki is almost certainly your only option between the two.

Question 6

Is italki safe and legitimate?

Accepted Answer

Yes — italki is a legitimate, well-established platform founded in 2007 with millions of users worldwide. Payments are processed securely, tutors are reviewed by students, and italki handles all payment disputes. It's one of the most trusted language learning platforms available.
