Dark
Top PickGermany's most celebrated Netflix original. Three time periods (1953, 1986, 2019) expose you to different registers of German — from formal post-war speech to contemporary dialogue. Deliberately paced with rich vocabulary.
Babylon Berlin

Deutschland 83

Start with German subtitles, not English
German audio + German subtitles forces your brain to process the language. English subtitles let you bypass the German entirely. Switch to German subs as soon as you can follow 60% or more.
Use Dark's time periods strategically
Dark's 1986 scenes are the most 'textbook' German. The 2019 scenes are the most colloquial. If you're B1, start with the 1986 episodes. If you're B2+, the 2019 scenes will challenge you most productively.
Mine 5–10 sentences per episode
Don't try to learn every unknown word. Pick the 5–10 sentences that feel most useful or interesting and export them to Anki with LangPanda. Consistency over volume.
Watch the same episode twice
First watch for comprehension and enjoyment. Second watch for active mining — pause on unknown compound nouns, look them up, export the best sentences.
Complement your watching with German speaking practice
Immersion builds comprehension — italki tutors build your speaking. Book a 1-on-1 German lesson with a native speaker from around $4–5 per lesson.
